Steelix has a hard time orienting herself within the confines of New Mauville. Her grumble is one of displeasure, with a sound like groaning metal and rumbling rocks.

When at last they've found a somewhat open area, Gavin places a hand on one of her massive metallic segments. He doesn't know if she can even feel the touch, let alone if it's any sort of comfort.

"You're the best girl for the job," he tells her. "I know you'd prefer to be outside, but we're going to work with what we've got."

Static air makes hairs stand on end. He feels uneasy here, glancing around for potential threat.

Gavin considers the Forretress that drifts onto the scene as he quickly ducks behind the massive bulk of his Steelix for cover.

It's a good Pokemon. Not one of his favourites, certainly, but a steel-type with no weaknesses outside of fire. His fingers curl around a pokeball... before he curses softly under his breath and lets it go.

It's not what he's here for.

"Crush it."

Steelix's iron tail slams down upon its foe, but the sturdy dual-type manages to endure the attack. It protects itself against the next swing of her tail, but no amount of iron defense can endure Steelix's stone edge.

Forretress faints, and Gavin offers Steelix a nod of approval as he steps out from behind.

An excitable pup bursts around a corner, yapping excitedly and humming with an electric energy.

Gavin tilts his head, curious.

He's never seen anything like this before. Assuming it to be Galarian, he watches for a minute as it chases its own tail and tries (and fails, miserably) to incite his Steelix to play. She grumbles and glances at her trainer as if begging for permission to crush.

He shakes his head.

"Shoo," he tells the dog. When he gestures at it in an attempt to get it to leave, it gets excited, seeming to think he wants to play. Rolling his eyes, he says, "Steelix, scare it off? Don't attack it."

A swing of her iron tail narrowly misses the pup, which flees.

The Emolga is showing off. It's clearly skilled in acrobatics, flipping and weaving through the air like a dance and narrowly avoiding the snap of Steelix's jaws when he flits too close to her maw.

Gavin's not interested in owning one; he watches it impassively for a time, waiting for other Pokemon, then sighs.

"That's it for tonight, then. Let's go."

He recalls his Steelix, ducking to avoid the Emolga as it whizzes overhead, and treks toward the entrance.
